Frank Darabont and Stephen King have worked together several times since Darabont took advantage of King's "Dollar Baby" program, purchasing the rights to "The Woman in the Room" for a dollar to create his short film adaptation.
After that, his first choice for a feature-length adaptation was The Mist, but he didn't want to be typecast as a horror director after also co-writing The Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Darabont went with The Shawshank Redemption for his directorial debut, making one of cinema's most beloved pieces of work. It wasn't for another 13 years that he'd direct The Mist.
