Vacationlander has been a lot of things since it’s inception. What started out as a small Etsy shop for my photography expanded to a blog about Maine and offered more and more products. The bestselling t-shirt design, a bear riding mooseback, was featured in Down East magazine as one of their favorite Maine-y graphic tees.
Since that article, I’ve had brands reaching out for help with designing merch for their business. I’ve always done brand design as a freelancer, so bringing both of those services all under one roof at Vacationlander just made sense. Creating a new look and logo that better represents our abilities and our mission was necessary. And as a brand designer, I love a good refresh.
Last year, we started the Pine Tree Picture Show on YouTube, a video series about movies in Maine and by Mainers. Celebrating Maine’s legacy in film has been a driving force behind a lot of what we’re creating now. From influential icons like Stephen King and John Ford to lesser known legends like Peter Laird, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Frank Churchill, score composer for Disney’s earliest masterpieces like Snow White and Bambi, what is not to love and celebrate?
There are a great many films set in Vacationland as well. Not only the vast majority of the Stephen King multiverse, but also the catalyst of comedy careers, Wet Hot American Summer, and the greatest film of all time according to IMDb, The Shawshank Redemption, were all set in Maine.
However very few films are produced in here. In fact, Maine has the third lowest ratio of films that are set in the state versus films that are produced there. For every three films set in Maine, only one is shot here. And this is where I found a good mission for Vacationlander.
We’re excited to release the Maine Movie Minute, a short-form video series accompanying the Pine Tree Picture Show to not only celebrate Maine’s legacy in film, but build support for new incentives to bring more film production to Vacationland.
The Vacationlander crew will continue to make comedy shorts and compete in film competitions as we are headed to Filmapalooza for the second year in a row, representing Portland, Maine. Merch design, brand identity, and video production for local Maine businesses is our way of funding our own content creation. So connect with us. Let’s make something fun together. You’ll be supporting local film production with Maine’s most fun creative studio.
